Posted February 14, Reviewed by Ekua Hagan. One question raised by several young men I interviewed during the past decade was whether a bromance counts as a marker of romantic orientation.
The corresponding author of the study is Adam J. Stefan Robinson is the first author of the paper.
Robinson and colleagues spoke to 30 young men using a semi-structured interview, and their findings have now been published in the journal Men and Masculinities. Of the 30 men interviewed, 29 reported that they had cuddled with a same-sex friend, and many respondents said that it happened frequently.
Bromance, another way of saying closeted gay?
The men felt less judged by their same-sex friends when they expressed emotion and found it easier to resolve conflicts within their homosocial relationship than their romantic one. They think, however, that some of the implications of these findings are problematic for straight women.
The authors speculate that another implication might concern traditional domestic arrangements. The authors recognize some of the limitations of their study.
Twenty-nine of the participants were white, and no analysis was conducted to for class or ethnic differences. While interesting, these findings are only representative of these young men, and further work needs to consider the impact of bromances on women. Exercise can help relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve and ease the associated pain.
